“No two minds ever come together without, thereby, creating a third, invisible, intangible force which may be likened to a third mind.”
By Napoleon Hill “Think and Grow Rich”
When you look behind the scenes at how individuals became successful you will find that they had surrounded themselves with individuals that played a key role in their success. Trust me when I say, “Nobody becomes successful on their own”.
The original concept of the Mastermind has become widely popular, but the term has also been misused. Granted there are many groups out there that call themselves mastermind groups to attract members, but when you really look at the characteristics of these groups, they are more like networking groups. A true mastermind is comprised of small groups of like-minded individuals who work to brainstorm, educate, and provide accountability to help sharpen the groups business and personal skills. In fact, one of the main goals of any mastermind group is to help their members achieve success and accomplish them.
Knowing this, how do you join or start a mastermind group?
Before you even begin, we need to go back to the 1st principle, purpose. When you find the purpose, you can then surround yourself with individuals that may not be just like you but are like-minded. Essentially, they share the same values and want the same results as you.
For example; for me, I was looking for a group to help me master marketing. I found a small group of business owners whose main purpose was business marketing success. We all shared similar values and beliefs and was comprised of highly successful business owners, marketing experts, web designers, social media gurus from high paying jobs who were either unemployed are looking to start a business. Everyone contributed in their own way, and I mean everyone. Because when you find a great mastermind group all focused on the same objective, unbelievable things happen, and real results are achieved.
But how do you find a mastermind group that works for you?
- You do your homework.
- You search the internet such as meetup.com.
- Reach out to contacts and ask.
- Networking groups can also help you find a mastermind group.
When I say networking groups, this means you find people in your local chamber of commerce, Rotary, or Kiwanis clubs where you can many times find resources pointing you in the right direction. However, I would personally stay away from BNI, LeTip and any other 1 per industry group, as I believe they go against the true mastermind group standards. When you simply can’t find one in your area, you may want to think about starting your very own. This allows you to pick and choose the right individuals that resonate with you. Keep in mind that you only need two people to get the ball rolling.
With any group, you want to set up a format or formula in order to run a successful mastermind. This can involve:
- Structured breakout groups where each person has 90 seconds to provide positive feedback on a member’s specific question.
- To the hot seat where you ask a specific question, pose a situation or obstacle and the whole group participates with positive suggestions.
One key element of the mastermind is that there can be no negativity only positive responses.
When you find the right group, the results can be outstanding.

He enjoys being an “Out of The Box Thinker” and has helped thousands of small business owners start, build and manage their own business. In 2009 Joe discovered a new approach to business through “The Science of Getting Rich” written by Wallace Wattles and the inspiration behind the movie "The Secret".
After successfully applying the SOGR principles as well as Napoleon Hill's "Think And Grow Rich" to his own business, Joe discovered that there is a large market segment that is being overtaxed, unprotected and unfairly targeted by IRS. Every year over 3,000,000 entrepreneurs start businesses unaware of the dangers of operating as a sole proprietor with over 25,000,000 in the process of going bankrupt. This discovery inspired Joe to develop programs, tools, and resources to help stem the tide of these avoidable small business failures.
Currently, Joe is building an online school for small business owners www.bedrockbusinessbuildersuniversity.com and www.taxauditsmackdown.com which will help entrepreneurs create the books and records needed to survive any tax audit.
